I hope you’re having a good conference, but it’s tough — I think a lot of us went to teaching colleges because we had this notion that they would let us better balance our lives than the R1′s that most of us went to for PhD’s. I wish I could have had a better or more realistic evaluation of what life was really like at a smaller school.

I missed out on vacation with my husband and kids because I had to stay home to prepare 4 syllabi and write a conference paper in December. Several people I know had a hard time understanding why I wasn’t enjoying myself with my family instead. I get this all the damn time! I’m at the conference now rather than spending time with my family. So much for the “months and months of vacation.” Thanks again.
